ZZ Ward and her band stopped by the Fairfield Theatre Company in Connecticut the other night (7/24) to play a riveting set of modern blues.
In recent years, the Pennsylvania-born/Oregon-raised Ward has quietly emerged as one of the most powerful and stirring singers around. Still touring behind 2017’s The Storm–which hit #1 on the Billboard Blues album chart–Ward’s growing songbook is filled with sultry, smoky muscle and onstage she has a breezy authority that’s punctuated by an endless supply of charisma.
Ward opened the set with the powerful “Let It Burn” and from there she launched into the soulful groove of “Ghost” and the bluesy thunder of “Put The Gun Down.” Her take on Etta James’ “Waiting For Charlie” was fabulous and the show-closing “Domino” was as captivating as it gets.
