The Regrettes are breaking up.
The L.A. band announced on social media this morning that they’re calling it a day. The post read: “…if you’re reading this or you’ve been to a show or bought a record, you’ve given us all some of the best years of our lives. after all these amazing years together, we are parting ways to focus on other projects. there is absolutely nothing but love in our hearts for each other and you all & we’re eternally grateful…we will have one final show and would love to have you there to dance and celebrate the end of an incredible run. we love you and we’ll see you all around (on december 21st at the fonda in la!!) the regrettes”
Formed in music school in 2015 by teenagers Lydia Night, guitarist Genessa Gariano, bassist Sage Chavis, and drummer Maxx Morando, The Regrettes demonstrated a preternatural penchant to play hook-filled pop punk that brought to mind the work of everyone from Bikini Kill to L7.
The band’s 2017 debut Feel Your Feelings Fool was a hit with critics, prompting SEM’s Alex Green to write: “The Regrettes are one of the most exciting finds of the year. They swing hard and free and Night’s phrasing reminds me of The Muff’s Kim Shattuck. She knows how to turn the pop corners with velocity and nerve. I don’t know what the future of music looks like, but I do know that The Regrettes are going to be a big part of it.”
When asked to comment on their demise, Green said: “The warning signs for me were the countless personnel changes in the past few years. Although Night and Gariano remained the two constants in the band, shedding four members in such little time really signaled a certain instability that worried me. The loss of Morando and Chavis changed the dynamic early on and though the new members were great players, I didn’t see the band recapturing the punch they originally had.”
Over the course of their career The Regrettes released three albums, played Summerfest and RiotFest, appeared on Conan and opened for Twenty One Pilots and Kate Nash.
