The Chills have announced they will release a new record in September.
Titled Snow Bound, the album is the follow up to 2015’s winning comeback Silver Bullets.
In a press release heralding the upcoming release, the band’s braintrust Martin Phillipps writes of the album’s thematic content: On Snow Bound lost heroes are lamented, relationships are re-evaluated, atonement is sought, mortality is mulled over and fake news is undercut. It’s serious stuff, the thoughts of a dysfunctional 50-something wrestling with maturity and discovering that their post-punk DIY beliefs still have a real voice that resonates between the fans of their early years and which can now pass down to the next generation.
Expanding on that, he added that he hopes the album is viewed as, “…a kind of Carole King Tapestry for aging punks.”
Of the legendary Dunedin outfit, SEM’s Alex Green once wrote: “The Chills are a perfect example of pop genius. I’d put singer/songwriter Martin Phillipps up there with everyone from XTC’s Andy Partridge to Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. Erudite, thoughtful and discursive, they remain one of the most potent, mysterious and infectious bands I’ve ever heard.”
Snow Bound is out September 14 via Fire Records.
