Collaborations are often tricky things, depending as they do on that rather devilish commodity ‘chemistry,’ which, even in its more reliably predictable lab setting amid the white lab coats and precision instruments, is not infrequently akin to some chimerical herding of molecular cats (or something; feel free to insert your own metaphor for making sense out of an impossibly complex world) but apply it to an artistic endeavor and you’re really kind of sailing out near the knife’s edge of unpredictability what with the fact that it’s human beings with all your basic foibles and moods and egos that we’re talking about here. All of which, we believe, points toward the particular joy we experience when a collab not only works but rather flourishes in the moment, which in turn brings us today to “Made of Rain,” the newest track from Gene Loves Jezebel alumnus Michael Ciravolo’s Beauty In Chaos project that’s set to appear on the soon-released Dancing With Angels LP and, more salient to our point here, finds Ciravolo teaming with vocalist extraordinaire Ashton Nyte and in the process producing one of 2024’s most immediately compelling singles. Don’t believe us? Ha!! One, that’s just pretty much inadvisable and, two, well, just click below and then tell us we’re blowing smoke. Pensive yet powerful, immediate yet allusive, brimming with atmosphere that you can just about swim in, full of yearning, desire and, perhaps most importantly, a hook that basically lasts the entirety of the track’s five-minute forty-one length, this is the pure exemplification of modern-day dark pop. It’s also, no surprise, one of those songs that, should you have your druthers, would never end. Click and revel.
