Portland, Oregon-based electronic/alternative rock band Vibrissae are preparing to release their stylistically diverse debut album, Somewhere Away, 19th August via Vipchoyo Sound Factory.
Vibrissae’s genre-blending sound is a representation of the band members themselves. They are originally from different regions in the world, but have come together to create a vibrant and enticing album. Imber Lingard (vocals on Somewhere Away; she has since left the band due to other commitments) hails from Australia, Emma Bell (various instruments, vocals) was born in Malaysia, and Aaron Bell (various instruments) and Sandi Leeper (vocals for current live performances) are from the United States.
Vibrissae journey through alternative rock, electronic, post-rock, and synth-based terrain on Somewhere Away, with lead single “Need” delivering a striking post-punk/alt-rock punch. Menacing guitar distortion restlessly roils from the get-go, then lets up for the calmer verses where Lingard sings in a sweet and airy tone amid a supple bass line, angular guitar chime, cymbals ticks, and a measured drum beat. The turbulent chorus sections plunge into a storm of guitar churn and driving drum hits whilst Lingard dispassionately commands, “This is what you want / This is what you need.”
The charged atmosphere of “Need” captivates and takes the listener somewhere away from the everyday.
