Lucy LaForge, the Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter and activist for women’s rights, records under the name Lucy & La Mer. She recently released the engaging indie folk/pop single, “Honey, Put Your Weapons Down”, which was produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Jared Lee Gosselin (India Arie, Corinne Bailey Rae).
LaForge’s soulful vocals have a retro edge; a little bit vintage country and a whole lot of sweet pop. She sings clearly, but with a wistful touch on “Honey, Put Your Weapons Down”, a reflective lament about a complex relationship.
Poignant, slowly wavering cello pulls, acoustic/electric guitar accents, echoed ticking and clacking percussion, contemplative piano and brighter keyboard notes, and occasional cymbals shimmer build a rich sonic nest that cradles LaForge’s lightly crestfallen tone and bittersweet lyrics.
LaForge’s words, which read like a confessional journal entry, are the center-point of the song as she professes with heartfelt regret, “It’s not that you’re not worth fighting for / I just don’t think love should feel like war.”
