Here’s a rule I generally try to follow in my life: If the Hold Steady are playing, I’m going.
Craig Finn and company played White Eagle Hall in Jersey City the other night (5/16) and the show was a blistering batch of Hold Steady classics that sounded as fresh and urgent as ever.
The band tore through crowd-pleasing numbers like “The Swish” and “Stuck Between Stations” and new tracks like the currently album-less “Entitlement Crew” fit perfectly next to them.
A real surprise was the live debut of “Traditional Village” and the show ended with the euphoric one-two punch of “Chips Ahoy!” and “Killer Parties.”
An exhilarating and perfect night.
The band’s Constructive Summer tour continues in August and runs through September.
