Sinéad O’Connor has died.

The Dublin-born singer/songwriter and political activist was 56.

Details are few, the family issuing a brief statement that reads: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”

O’Connor burst onto the music scene in 1987 with The Lion And The Cobra and from there she went on to release ten albums, including I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got and Universal Mother.

Her Prince-penned “Nothing Compares 2 U” single, which was released in 1990, hit number one on the charts across the globe.

O’Connor’s 2021 best-selling memoir Rememberings was hailed by the Independent as “…a riveting account of modern celebrity…that addresses the grim truths of sex and power in the modern world.”

Over the course of her decorated career, the Grammy Award-winning artist recorded and shared the stage with the likes of Peter Gabriel, The The, Roger Waters, Wyclef Jean, Dave Stewart, Bono and Shane MacGowan.
