Stereo Embers is sad to report that Primal Scream’s Robert “Throb” Young has died.
He was 49.
The founding member of the legendary Glasgow band, Young along with singer Bobby Gillespie formed the group back in 1984. Although he was originally the bass player, he moved to guitar when Jim Beattie left the band.
Primal Scream’s Screamadelica was the first album to win the coveted Mercury Prize and in their career, most of the group’s nine studio albums have charted in the top ten in the United Kingdom.
Young left Primal Scream in 2006 after the Riot City Blues album and although his departure was said to be merely a sabbatical, he never rejoined the band.
In 2013, Gillespie told Drowned In Sound: “Robert Young’s an incredible musician, an incredible talent. He’s one of the most talented people I’ve ever known…I grew up with Robert and I love him like a brother, but we don’t see him any more. I don’t think anybody does. I don’t really know what’s happening there. I don’t think he’s making music now. But I wish he was because he’s super talented.”
Young was found dead in his East Sussex apartment and at this time no official cause of death has been declared.
Young is survived by his wife and two sons.
We have lost our comrade and brother, Robert Young. A beautiful and deeply soulful man.

He was an irreplaceable talent, much admired amongst his peers, as Johnny Marr said “Throb with a gold top Les Paul – unbeatable”

He once said to me “when we go onstage it’s a war between us and the audience”. He never let go of that attitude.
