As a taper in the early ’90s I would always record the opening band in hopes of discovering a new act to follow.
For example, I remember recording the Dave Matthews Band open for God Street Wine at the Wetlands – I had never heard of them and was blown away.
Seldom does an opening band leave such an impression on me and I am happy to say I had a similar experience recently at the Galactic show at the Capitol Theatre. I got to see Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds for the first time and this powerful 7-piece blues/soul/funk band from Brooklyn were nothing short of stunning. Lead singer Arleigh Kincheloe’s huge voice and amazing stage presence make her a force to be reckoned with. Backed by amazing musicians it was one of the most energetic and infectious sets of music I’ve seen in a long time.
