California-based singer-songwriter Rain Perry has teamed up with Texan guitarist and songwriter Jon Dee Graham (the Skunks, the True Believers) for a compelling and poignant video that was made to motivate us to vote today in the high-stakes U.S. midterm elections.
The video highlights the tragedies, injustices, struggles, and triumphs of those who believe the U.S., under the malign and malicious leadership (if it can be called that) of Trump, the G.O.P., and their blind followers. The way to a better future is forwards and not backwards as it has been going for the past two years.
Perry and Graham cover Bruce Springsteen’s song “Rocky Ground” and its potent accompanying video. A vocal choir comprised of Austin, TX singers Noelle Hampton, Jaimee Harris, Shawnee Kilgore, Daisy O’Connor, and Emily Shirley adds beauty and power. The track is the second single from Perry’s as-yet-unnamed upcoming album that will see release in early 2019. Perry views the song as a rallying cry to get out the vote today.
To help in this endeavor of getting more people to the polls, Perry traveled from California to Houston in late October to manage a pop-up office for Democratic Texan Beto O’Rourke who is battling Republican Ted Cruz for a spot in the U.S. Senate.
The politically active Perry was horrified by the ‘zero tolerance’ policy the Trump administration has for their deliberate separation of migrant children from their parents at the border, with many children still not reunited with their families. She founded the group Every Child Returned, the members of which protest in front of the facilities where children were held against their will. The collective has also protested all across the country.
This horrific issue and many others that have adversely affected the average U.S. person, as well as the unity and strength of those fighting against the corruption and destruction of our nation are reflected in the stark wake-up call video from Perry and Graham, and mirrored the video’s concluding statement: “We Cried. We marched. Now we have to VOTE.”
The single is available at Bandcamp.com, iTunes and Amazon.
