No Fire in the Sand – What an image those words conjure up! It begs the question of whether this elemental fire was never actually there, or was present and consuming its fuel, only to be extinguished, leaving cold ash in its place?
The subject above takes on a pensive and transformative power on the new EP from Swiss music group Black Sea Dahu. This record consists of five very intense, but reflective songs about the absence of love.
An unfolding maturity can be found in their sound, which began on last year’s debut album, White Creatures and is more pronounced on No Fire in the Sand.
Yet the EP’s songs were taken from the same session as those that ended up on the album. One would think the metamorphosis has occurred due to the band, fronted by Janine Cathrein, having an intense touring schedule – a new maturity forged in the fire of live performances.
This more seasoned feeling that can be perceived on the EP, however, is actually created by the thoughtful selection and sequencing of these two releases. No Fire in the Sand is the perfect follow up to White Creatures and it’s the ideal portal to an evening of deep introspection.
