When it comes to The Smiths, we’ll take any glimmer of hope, yes?
If Morrissey says he wouldn’t reform The Smiths for 50 million dollars, we’re sure he’s leaving the door open for 51.
If Johnny Marr declares the idea of the band reforming makes him sick to his stomach, we’re sure there’s not a no anywhere in that sentence.
After all, he could probably take the stage a bit queasy…
That’s what the early demise of one of the greatest bands of all time has done to us. It’s made us optimistic in the weirdest of ways.
So here’s another glimmer of hope from the darkness of the defunct: The Smiths are now on Twitter.
The account is managed by the legendary Manchester band’s record label and although no Tweets have been posted, the account, which is only hours old, already has almost ten thousand followers.
Many are speculating that this sudden social media presence could mean anything, but the practical reason for the account probably has to do with promoting the band’s back catalog or being a direct tie-in to promote the 30 year anniversary of the release of The Queen Is Dead.
Or could it mean something else?
And by something else, we mean…
Well, you know what we mean.
Not sure about you, but we’ll be checking that account hourly for the next 50 years….
