I’ve always believed that out of bad comes good.
When The Black Crowes broke up, I was devastated, but The Magpie Salute rising from their ashes has proven the aforementioned adage to be right on the money.
Comprised of former Black Crowes alums Rich Robinson, singer Charity White and guitarist Marc Ford, along with Joe Magistro (drums) and singers Adrien Reju and Katrine Ottosen–all of who played in Robinson’s solo band–The Magpie Salute is one of the tightest and most refreshing rock and roll acts around.
The band also features guitarist Nico Bereciartua, lead singer John Hogg and bassist Sven Pipien.
Set to wrap up an extensive tour in grand fashion with two sold-out Irving Plaza gigs, the band stopped by the Fairfield Theatre Company, where they blasted through an inspired and rousing set. Playing numbers from their self-titled debut album which came out in June, the band was in fine form. They played searing renditions of Led Zeppelin’s “Ten Years Gone” and “Custard Pie” as well as playful take on Little Feat’s “Fat Man In The Bathtub.”
Hogg is a vocal force of nature and he powered through Black Crowes favorites like “Jealous Again” and “Remedy” with soulful precision.
Although The Magpie Salute will be off the road for the rest of 2017, the next year is sure to be a busy one, as they’re planning to release a double album of all new material.
“We want to make a fully original doubleĀ album,” Robinson said in a statement issued by his publicist The Mitch Schneider Organization (MSO). “We want to share our collective and individual experiences in life. Life on tour, life traveling and seeing the world. Life watching our whole universe being torn down and built up again. We have a lot to say in our creation, and this is the best way we know how. By moving forward as artists together without the smoke, without the distractions and lay ourselves out in the open for what we believe is the universal good.”
