Backed by a murderers row of musicians, The Joe Perry Project are one of the best live acts in the country. Comprised of Perry on guitar, Chris Robinson of The Black Crowes on vocals, Brad Whitford and Buck Johnson of Aerosmith on guitar and keyboards, and Robert DeLeo and Eric Kretz from the Stone Temple Pilots on bass and drums, the all-star outfit’s show at the Capitol Theater (Aug 27) was a riveting display of rock and roll majesty.
A scorching set that covered Aerosmith’s songbook (“Let The Music Do The Talking,” “Draw The Line,” and “Mama Kin,”) the band also threw in numbers by the Stone Temple Pilots (“Vasoline”), The Black Crowes (“Jealous Again,” “Twice As Hard”), and Joe Perry’s “Won’t Let Me Go” and “Fortunate One.”
A joyful cross between Jagger and Plant, the in-form Robinson was not only as charismatic as ever, he was the perfect foil for Perry’s fast fretwork and steady soloing. DeLeo and Kretz held the rhythm section down with muscle and groove while Perry blazed away, reminding the crowd that he’s one of the best guitar players currently inhabiting the planet.
The encore of Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way” and Tiny Bradshaw’s “The Train Kept ‘A-Rollin'” was absolute perfection, capping off a rather brilliant and night of ageless rock and roll bliss.
