I’m still blown away by how powerful Karl Denson’s set was in New York the other night.
Denson, who has played with everyone from Lenny Kravitz to the Rolling Stones, played the packed Capitol Theatre with verve, energy and a breathless devotion to his fans.
A rollicking set of funk, blues and rock and roll, Denson and his band blazed through each number with stirring authority.
Still touring behind his brilliant 2014 release New Ammo, Denson’s show was a reminder that live music should be uninhibited, wild and fun. He was joined by legendary keyboardist Chuck Leavell (The Allman Brothers, The Rolling Stones, Gov’t Mule) for several numbers, including a rendition of “Tumblin’ Dice.”
And his set was just that–a smoldering collection of songs both old and new, Denson proved that he’s one of the greatest live acts on the planet.
Here are some of my favorite shots.
