The Hold Steady Live At The Brooklyn Bowl

Written by:

The Hold Steady booked four dates at the Brooklyn Bowl this past week to celebrate the 1oth anniversary of their Boys And Girls In America album.

The band’s third record from 2006 has just been re-released in deluxe format, replete with b-sides and unreleased demos.

Franz Nicolay, the idiosyncratic keyboardist who joined The Hold Steady full-time in 2006 but who also left them in 2010, is playing on all of the dates.

On Wednesday night, the band were in ferocious form–singer Craig Finn was on fire, spouting out streetwise tales of suburban hustles, boozy self-exiles and spectacular romantic failures. Finn looked like a feral Elvis Costello, pounding the stage with anguish and smarts.

It was a brilliant show with a generous setlist and an aching, but urgent vitality that was soul-quenching and inspiring.

Although The Hold Steady haven’t put out a record in almost three years, singer Finn told the New York Times:  “I think what it is, is just try to have a good time this weekend and see what comes up,” he said. “Everyone’s mind is open, but there aren’t any definite plans, either.”
