The Flaming Lips stopped by the Capitol Theatre the other night (7/30) and they did so in spectacular fashion.
Punctuated by confetti, balloons and psychedelia, the legendary Oklahoma outfit are truly one of the most colorful and arresting bands around, and the show was a kaleidoscopic blast of visual bliss.
Singer Wayne Coyne is not only a commanding frontman, he’s a deliciously crazed conductor who navigates the dissolving walls of confetti and balloons with an expertise that falls somewhere between Glenn Gould, Andy Kaufman and the leader of a marching band from Mars.
The band was great and numbers like “She Don’t Use Jelly” and “The Yeah Yeah Song (With All Your Power)” were anthemic and rousing. Elsewhere, their cover of Daniel Johnston’s “True Love Will Find You In The End” was unexpectedly stirring and “Do You Realize?” sent the crowd floating home deeply satisfied.
