Davey Ray Moor and Liam McKahey, founding and integral members of the defunct-since-2005, UK-based band Cousteau, have reformed this year under the slightly adjusted moniker of CousteauX, and they continue to ply the refined, cosmopolitan-noir alt-pop/rock that Cousteau was celebrated for. Cousteau was known for producing moody brooders and robust belters (both vocally and instrumentally) that recalled the bygone era when Bogie was King, alcohol was called liquor (or booze from more uncouth kissers), men were gents and women were dames, and nightclubs were dimly-lit, smoke-filled joints (Oh, wait, maybe they still are…).
Moor and McKahey have each been musically active in his own right since the demise of Cousteau. Moor released his own album Telepathy, produced Italian singer Cristina Donà’s debut album, and co-wrote a clutch of songs for Carl Barât’s eponymous solo album. McKahey went (quasi-) solo as Liam McKahey and the Bodies, releasing two high-caliber albums, Lonely Road in 2009 and Black Vinyl Heart this past May, and collaborated with various artists on Tony Visconti’s International Blue music project.

The first mysterious sightings of Moor and McKahey’s union as the latest iteration of CousteauX occurred in early July on Facebook with a cryptic page appearing that was named CousteauX. It seemed like a fansite dedicated to the original band, but then on August 3rd Moor and McKahey made their presence known with the official statement that they had reformed as CousteauX and were currently recording a collection of new songs in Australia. They christened a new website and opened a members-only fan club named The Full Moon Club, where subscribers are privy to demo and new material, among other band-described “rare and exotic delights”.
The exclusive new demo recording of “Maybe You” is now available to members of the club. Watch (and listen to) the story of CousteauX unfold at the following sites:
