Cabaret Voltaire are back.
Breaking a 26-year drought, the legendary Sheffield outfit are set to release a new album this November.
Titled Shadow of Fear, the album, which will be out on Mute, is the band’s first since 1994’s The Conversation.
Considered pioneers of the electronic/industrial scene, Cabaret Voltaire were one of the most inventive and sonically innovative bands of their time.
The band formed in 1973 and were co-founded by Richard H. Kirk, Stephen Mallinder and Christ Watson. The original trio haven’t been together since 1981 when Watson left the fold and when they went on hiatus in ’94 Mallinder decided he was done with the band.
Although Kirk is the sole remaining member, one listen to the album’s first single “Vasto” reveals they’ve lost none of their sting.
In a statement about the album Kirk wrote: “The mission statement from the off was no nostalgia. Normal rules do not apply. Something for the 21st Century. No old material.”
He went on to say that the record, “…was finished just as all the weirdness was starting to kick in. Shadow of Fear feels like a strangely appropriate title. The current situation didn’t have much of an influence on what I was doing — all the vocal content was already in place before the panic set in — but maybe due to my nature of being a bit paranoid there are hints in there about stuff going a bit weird and capturing the current state of affairs.”
Shadow of Fear is out November 26.
