Stereo Embers is shocked and saddened to learn of the death of Emilio Nevarez.
Nevarez, who played bass for The Lucky Eejits, was killed in Oakland on Sunday morning after being struck by gunfire.
The gunfire was not intended for Nevarez , who was putting away his equipment after a gig, but was between two men who were having an altercation nearby. That altercation yielded gunfire when one of the men pulled out a gun and fired it. Nevarez and a 34 year old man who happened to be walking by, were both struck by bullets, the latter sustaining a wound to the arm.
Nevarez, who worked full-time as an audio engineer, was fatally struck in the neck and pronounced dead on the scene.
His best friend and longtime girlfriend were by his side.
Candles, stuffed animals and flowers have been left outside the Golden Bull Bar, where Nevarez and his band had just played.
The Lucky Eejits, who were set to head into the studio in May to record their new E.P., describe themselves as, “Three piece punk. Make a homie want to skate with these high energy beats. Head throbbing punk at its best…Blasting high speed, energetic and upbeat music. With lots of “whoahs and ohs” the Eejits rein the crowd in with easy sing along songs about memorable experiences and the power of unity.”
Stereo Embers’ Matt Sloan saw the band live last year and wrote that their performance was: “…a high octane cocktail of Irish punk and anthemic hardcore. This is a band with guts, nerve and velocity. Their set was a colossal blast of positive energy.”
The shooting itself took place on 14th and Franklin in Oakland, but the incident was not related to the Golden Bull Bar.
The shooter has not been captured and witnesses are being urged to contact the Oakland Police Department Homicide Section at 510-238-3821 or the TIP LINE at 510-238-7950.
