Nate Jespersen, the musician who records under the Ultrviolence moniker showcases his Canadian roots on an amusingly zany new music video for “I Love The Winter,” a winning track from his recent rousing album Sally Would Say..
The independent singer and songwriter has been crafting compelling post-punk-driven music since 2008, but only lately does he does he break out of his broodingly ruminative mood to provide uplift, ambition, and hope on Sally Would Say..
The darkness that pervaded a lot of Jespersen’s earlier work has dissipated, and in its place shines bright rays of light in the form of restlessly propulsive indie rock numbers, gritty post-punkers, and kaleidoscopic ambient music (sometimes on the same song!).
Jespersen’s rich vocals soar to robust heights, bolstered by thick and teeming Wall-Of-Sound guitars. He’s reenergized and has found a positive purpose in his lyrics that was absent from his previous material.
Stereo Embers is stoked to host the premiere of Ultrviolence’s the music video for “I Love The Winter.”
It’s a perfectly timed track and video as those of us in the Northern Hemisphere enter the winter season full of lowering temperatures and frozen precipitation.
The silly antics of the video belie the more serious nature of the psychgaze-oriented song that beats with a waltz tempo and drifts with a dreamy wistfulness.
The video was filmed and directed by Sarah Scott and features Jespersen in the cold Canadian climes, with plenty of snow on the ground and a chill in the air. But that doesn’t stop Jespersen from having a good time.
Outfitted in summer attire (a Sex Pistols T-shirt and short-shorts, of course), he goes to work outside, mowing his snow-covered lawn and whacking the frosty weeds away. Sports are played with gusto, or, well, at least kinda attempted in the adverse weather conditions.
There’s also a trip to the rocky beach, complete with Jespersen sunning himself under a Canadian Maple Leaf umbrella, even though the temperature is a balmy below-freezing…
It’s all done in good fun – an enjoyable romp to celebrate the season, and much-need levity during this difficult year.
Jespersen comments, “We thought it would be funny to take the song’s lyrics too seriously, and enjoy the winter like one would enjoy the summer. It was extremely fun to make… especially during these COVID times.”
