L.A. Reid dropped a hip-hop bombshell on the Rap Radar podcast.
The Epic Records CEO revealed that the legendary group A Tribe Called Quest is getting ready to release a new album.
The album will be called We Got It From Here, Thank You For Your Service.
Not only that, but Reid confirmed that the album was recorded with the entire band, prior to Phife Dog’s death in the early Spring.
Of the record, Reid said: “I’m really happy about it man, it’s really something special. It’s one of the things I’m most excited about over everything we’re working on.”
He called the release date “very soon” and dispelled any notion that the album’s contents were odds and ends of unreleased tracks stitched together to resemble a new ‘Quest record.
“Phife is there,” he said. “…the whole group: Jarobi, the entire group, everybody. It’s great, too.”
There has been no comment from the A Tribe Called Quest camp, but it would be their first new album in almost 20 years, their last being 1998’s The Love Movement.
What’s impressive is the secrecy about the recording of the new album because back in November, 2015, Phife Dog lamented to Rolling Stone about how hard it was to get the band to play shows together, saying: “…If we can’t get together and do shows, it’s going to be even more difficult going into the studio and recording an album.”
He may have been throwing a red herring at the public, because it appears the album was already recorded at the time of his comments.
