The legendary Toots And The Maytals paid a visit to the Capitol Theatre the other night in Port Chester, New York and it was one of the most joyous shows of the year.
Led by the ageless Jamaica-born Toots Hibbert, the band has been around since the early 60s, but their lineup has undergone several iterations since then and now even features his daughter Leba on backing vocals. But Hibbert remains the band’s true force and this tour finds the musician back on the road for the first time since 2013. The pause in action for Toots and the Maytals was due to Hibbert being hit by a flying vodka bottle during a show in Virginia, an incident which yielded a concussion and several staples in his head to close the wound.
The five-time Grammy-nominated outfit took a pause while Hibbert had to reckon with the idea that playing live could be a safe proposition for him once again.
Hibbert seems to have made piece with that unfortunate incident and looking muscular and fit, he led his band through a rather electrifying and utterly buoyant set. “Pressure Drop” was pure reggae gold; “Pomp And Pride” was filled with rock steady stomp and “Monkey Man” was filled with fiery soul.
Enjoy these shots.
