Sometimes the unlikeliest of bedfellows can make gold together.
In a bizarre pairing, the social media platform TikTok and indie rock legends Pavement have done just that.
This weekend the RIAA informed the members of Pavement that one of their B-sides “Harness Your Hopes” had gone Gold.
Thanks to activity on TikTok, where users set up their own dance sequences to “Harness Your Hopes” the song has now sold over 500,000 units.
Taken from the Spit On A Stranger EP (1999), the song was intended to be on the Stockton outfit’s Brighten The Corners album but in the end was left off the record.
So how did a Pavement B-side end up becoming their biggest hit?
It seems the surge in popularity can be traced to the 2022 video for the song that came on the heels of the EP’s reissue.
Directed by Alex Ross Perry (Listen Up Philip) and starring Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets, The Book Of Boba Fett), the clip seems to have resonated with a new generation of Pavement fans.
In other Pavement news, Perry has been linked to what is being referred to as his “Untitled Pavement Project,” which many believe is a long-form documentary on the band.
