Comprised of Black Crowes alums like Rich Robinson and Marc Ford, several members of Robinson’s touring band and rounded out by lead singer John Hogg and bassist Sven Pipien, the Magpie Salute may only have formed in 2016, but their musical experience adds up to decades.
The Magpie Salute’s debut album High Water 1 is a month away from release and to herald its arrival the band has kicked off an extensive tour. They stopped by the Fairfield Theatre Company the other night (7/21) and they were absolutely brilliant.
Their past shows have been rich on Crowes covers, but this time around “She Gave Good Sunflower” was the lone Black Crowes track in the set.
Hogg is a vocal force of nature and he powered through numbers like “Sister Moon” and “Hand And Hand” with power and soul.
Robinson is one of the finest players out there and his blistering leads and slinking rhythms led the band through bluesy waters and rootsy, rockin’ straits with muscle and grace.
The Magpie Salute is: Rich Robinson, Marc Ford, John Hogg, Sven Pipien, Matt Slocum and Joe Magistro.
Their take on classics by Dylan and Elvis Presley showcased the band’s sonic diversity and the closing number “Send Me An Open” was crushingly exquisite.
