SXSW Is Cancelled Due To Coronavirus Fears

Written by:

SXSW has been officially cancelled.

Rumors have been swirling for the past few weeks that concerns over the global spread of coronavirus would cause the annual tech/music/film conference to be cancelled and now those rumors have been confirmed.

Attracting bands, filmmakers and tech tastemakers, the conference looked to be on shaky ground earlier this week when Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, Mashable and Vevo all announced they were cancelling plans to appear at the event.

SXSW was set to start March 13 and end March 22.

The event began back in 1986 and has grown over the years into one of the most popular conferences in the world.

“We are devastated to share this news with you,” SXSW officials said in a prepared statement. “We are now working through the ramifications of this unprecedented situation.”

“I’ve gone ahead and declared a local disaster in the city, and associated with that have issued an order that effectively cancels South by Southwest this year,” Austin, Texas Mayor Steve Adler said to reporters early this morning.
