Sweet Ohio Soul: The Vindys Live In New York

Written by:

How the Vindys have existed for ten years without me knowing about them is beyond me.

The Ohio outfit are a brilliant live act and I’m hooked.

The Vindys opened for Marcus King and they were riveting.

Led by singer Jackie Popovec, the Youngstown band blasted their brand of indie pop soul right across the Capitol Theatre and the crowd devoured it.

Popovec is a commanding and beguiling presence and she’s backed by one of the best rhythm sections in the business: John Anthony and Rick Deak (guitars), Nathan Anthony (keyboards), bassist Brendan Burke, Owen Davis (drums) and the Youngstown Horns: saxophonist Garret Kuchmaner, trumpeter Kyle O’Donnell, and trombonist Brian Mayle.

“Bugs” and “Save Me” were particularly winning and their cover of Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” was an unexpected joy.

The Vindys will be on tour with Pat Benatar this summer.
