Following on from their 2014 rootsy-noir breakthrough Ace Called Zero (produced by Phosphorescent), New York band Heaven’s Jail return with their third album Widow’s Work, released May 7th. Having already let slip the Zevonesque title track, they now offer the more Crazy Horse-driven “Warbirds,” which we here at Stereo Embers not only find partakes of the essence of rock’n’roll but also expands into an existential terrain that’s been with us since young men left their mothers and marched off to fight for whatever cause seemed, at whatever time, a matter of poignant life and death. Rich with the imagery of conflict and fear, regret and bravado, the track very plainly exemplifies the vagaries of war, and by extension, life itself. Have a listen, be moved, be rocked, be both.
