Hailing from North Bay, Ontario, Twilight Fields is the moniker of singer-songwriter Allister Thompson.
This week Twilight Fields is releasing “Demagogue,” one of the most politically-charged singles of 2018.
Ahead of the new album Songs from the Age of Ruin, which is expected in early 2019, Twilight Fields presents a furious protest song against Donald and all alike “political” snakes that rule the world, from the American continent and all across Europe, far to the East and Africa too.
Thompson suggests in this number that we’re in very serious trouble.
Thompson wrote, played, engineered, mixed, mastered and designed everything himself from his home studio in Northern Canada, and his new album is a warning to the present and an apology to a possible future.
Personally, I’d feel fatally ashamed if I had to apologize (as a human) to future generations–we must change the game now!
The official video for the track starts with Hannah Arendt’s words–“the ideal subject of totalitarian rule is not the convicted Nazi or the convicted Communist but people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction (i.e. the reality of experience) and the distinction between true and false (i.e. the standards of thought) no longer exist”–then comes Donald grumbling, “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” while the prologue closes with Martin Luther King declaring, “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.”
All through the clip you’ll see international demagogues and fascists juxtaposed against free politicians and activists who battle the former and battle for you, me and all the people of the world. Donald leads the dance in the video where you may also see Lepen, Farage, Pauline, and a number more shining snakes selling rotten vegetables to their “voters.” Also keep an eye out for Malcolm X, Emma Goldman, Gandhi, and a number more brilliant examples of those who were determined to bringing the truth to the people.
As for the music, it’s a creative blend of indie rock with a hint of Krautrock and it all adds up to the idea that protest song is alive and well.
LYRICS
Here’s the new boss on the scene
Always raging, lying and mean
He knows five wrongs erase one right
Just give the masses someone to fight
Someone to hate, someone to hurt
Someone who’s different, sound the alert
Pick those traitors out of the crowd
Make an example, make us all proud
The demagogue is coming
He’ll give you riches at no expense
He’ll cut your taxes and build a fence
To keep out foreigners who’d take what’s yours
Your plastic and metal, all you adore
He’ll usher in the bright white new age
He’ll fight progress and turn back the page
To a past that never existed
A vision of glory so evil and twisted
The demagogue is coming
Take to the streets before it’s too late
You can’t beat him with status updates
His followers ride his wave of hate
This fight is eternal it never will abate
The demagogue is coming
Keep Up With Twilight Fields
