When Leeds lads Doug Aikman and Andy Watkins decided to form a band in 2011, they at first opted for the name Pug Ugly. For myriad reasons, not least the idea that it bit a little too close to the bone (a touch of typical biting UK self-effacing humor there), they reconsidered and came away with the slightly more ambiguous Flies On You. What they weren’t in the least ambivalent about was that this would be a punk band, if one in a rather more mature stylee, taking in all manners of the splintered form including, as says their bio, “Yugoslav indie, Belgian synth-punk, 60’s chanteuses, [and] Big Youth.” That the end result as often as not attracts the term ‘DIY post-punk’ may not exactly thrill either of them, they’ve come to accept it while we here at SEM positively embrace it with typical American ‘gusto.’ They’ve are soon to release their second album ‘etcetera’ (March 6th, in fact) which we’ve been honored to hear and without giving too much away, it’s a terrific wide-eyed bonkers bouquet of, umm, well, DIY post-punk (actually it’s quite a bit more than that but how could we resist?). All such barmy prevarication aside, the album’s first video arrived over the wire this past weekend, and who better to share it with than our faithful and always up-for-it reader. Nice way to kick off the week, is what we’re thinking.
