Emerging fully formed as a force of pure creative impetus out of the none-more-fertile Silverlake/Echo Park scene, Fever the Ghost have made innocent bystanders levitate and sent unbelievers running from their live performances with their ankles on fire. For their, umm, feverish partisans, however, the band bring rapture down from the skylights and twirl kaleidoscopic halos above their ecstatic heads. Oh, well, OK, perhaps such supernatural goings-on haven’t exactly been reported by those in attendance at Fever the Ghost’s gigs, but judging by the live version of “Vervain..” seen here – the track is due to appear on their forthcoming debut album Zirconium Meconium, dropping from the heavens Sept. 25th on Complicated Game – it’s not all that far-fetched. Trippy, proggy, psych-draped and a-burst with a sophistication that would seem to belie their tender years, the track sounds like some John Dwyer basement concoction that’s busted loose and is now pursuing the golden mean between Gong and a more pastoral Deerhoof. The only downside we’ve discovered about this startling slab of drift-o-matic wonder, after playing it over and over again, is that you end up playing it over and over again. September 25th can NOT come soon enough.
