Stereo Embers TRACK OF THE DAY – “Canyon” by The Dead Ships

Written by:

Hailing from LA with enough brash immediacy to garner accolades like “the bluesy Wrecking Crew” (that would be the LA Times) along with comparisons to the Strokes, Pixies, and (inevitably) The Black Keys, to us here at SEM The Dead Ships seem to sail on similar seas as those charted by Arcade Fire back when they were young and hungry and, more aptly, Broken Social Scene, what with their penchant for a breakneck rock looseness moored to a tight pop intelligence. It’s no wonder, then, that they attracted the production efforts of Brendan Canning, nor that they’ve found themselves sharing stages with everyone from Yo La Tengo, the Soft Pack, Two Gallants, and King Khan, among many others. This is the first of two self-released EPs slated to drop in 2015, and though we can’t speak to the next one, we do know that, with this first one, all of a sudden we can hardly wait for the coming summer.
