Squeeze put on one of the most charming, tuneful and altogether irresistible shows of the year the other night at the Capitol Theatre.
The New York venue was sold out and for good reason–Squeeze, who got their start in London way back in 1978, have been one of the most beloved bands of the last four decades, their songbook filled with an endless supply of catchy gems.
The band has gone through several line-up permutations over the years (new bassist Lucy Shaw is the latest addition) but their chief brainstrusts–Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook–still front the band with pure pop authority. The band’s last album was 2015’s Cradle To The Grave, but they reached back into their discography and played hit after hit with an unreasonable amount of ease. “Hourglass” popped with buoyant groove, “Another Nail In My Heart” cascaded through the rafters and “Goodbye Girl” was nothing short of triumphant.
The band also checked in with covers of numbers by The Easybeats (“Friday On My Mind”) and Tom Waits (“I Don’t Wanna Grow Up”).
Squeeze have nothing left to prove, but this show left no doubt that they remain ageless and as vital as ever.
