Souled American Return With First New Album In 30 Years

Written by:

Breaking a 30-year silence, Souled American have returned.

The cult-favorite low-fi Americana band from Chicago, which now consists of two original core members—bassist Joe Adducci and guitarist Chris Grigoroff—have released Sanctions, their first new album since 1996’s Notes Campfire.

Released via Jealous Butcher, the twelve track album features songs like “Fractured Sun,” “Boom Boom,” and “Everytime.”

An elusive band with a quiet social media presence, Souled American have put out only a fistful of songs over the years, including a cover of Kris Kristofferson’s “Please Don’t Tell Me How The Story Ends” and two original tracks (“Ringside Suite” and “Sorry State”.

In a statement on their Bandcamp page, the band writes of Sanctions: “Arriving just in time, with decency roundly mocked, as dissent spells career disaster and algorithms isolate us into units of convenience, Sanctions dares explore roots and traditions in both sound and consequence, revealing a band that has lost members but gained gravity. Acclaimed by Jeff Tweedy, The Jayhawks, John Darnielle, and Counting Crows, Souled American here elevate their unique style of ambient Americana into a life-altering experience full of feeling and drama, like some ink-stamped elegy fresh off the printing presses of Walt Whitman.”
