Along with pal Samuel Bayer, Sean Penn co-directs Mudcrutch’s new video for “I Forgive It All.”
A visual clinic of contrasts, the clip juxtaposes the poverty of the Great Depression with the poverty of the modern age. Sir Anthony Hopkins takes on the role of an aging man of great wealth who looks back at his childhood while taking a circumspect drive around the more privileged and tony areas of Los Angeles.
Hopkins’ mood matches the tone of the spare and moving Tom Petty-penned ballad and by the end of the clip, he’s gone from the streets of palaces to the streets themselves.
It’s a stirring moment of forgiveness that’s as haunting as it is humbling.
