Composer Ryuichi Sakamoto has died.
The Tokyo-born composer, actor and record producer had been battling several forms of cancer since 2014.
He was 71.
Over the course of his decorated career, the Oscar-winning musician collaborated with David Sylvian, Aztec Camera, Thomas Dolby and David Byrne. He made his acting debut alongside David Bowie in 1983’s Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence.
In addition to winning the Academy Award, Sakamoto also won two Golden Globes, a Grammy and a BAFTA. Additionally, he received the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from France’s Ministry of Culture and the Golden Pine Award for Lifetime Achievement at the 2013 International Samobor Film Music Festival.
The electronic music legend’s last album was 12, a minimalist electronica effort which came out earlier this year.
