Peter Perrett Of The Only Ones Returns With First Solo Album

Written by:

Peter Perrett, the enigmatic frontman of the legendary The Only Ones will be releasing a new album this summer.

Just days after his 65th birthday (April 8), the details of Perrett’s first solo record began to surface.

Set for a June 30 release on Domino, the album is called How The West Was Won and it was produced by Chris Kimsey (The Rolling Stones, Killing Joke, Psychedelic Furs).

Backed by his sons Jamie and Peter Jr. the album features ten new songs, including the perfectly droll title track, which finds Perrett kicking through the ashes of Western civilization and surveying the damage.

As much a scathing indictment of modern culture, U.S. imperialism and corporate greed, the song also suggests that when people want something they’ll destroy anyone to get it. Perrett explains, “It’s no mystery/It’s your history/It’s what you’ve always done.”

Formed in 1976 in South London, The Only Ones output amounted to three critically-acclaimed albums–The Only Ones, Even Serpents Shine, Baby’s Got Gun–and their song “Another Girl Another Planet” remains one of the most influential songs of the last 50 years.
