Pete Way, the charismatic bassist who co-founded the band UFO has died.
The Middlesex-born musician was 69.
In spite of having nearly 15 years with the band under his belt, Way left UFO in 1982 after the hard rock outfit’s sound started taking a more commercial turn. He went on to form Fastway and from there he played in Waysted and was the bassist for Ozzy Osbourne’s Diary of a Madman tour.
Way rejoined UFO in 1992.
SEM’s Matt Sloan called Way’s 2017 autobiographical memoir A Fast Ride Out of Here: Confessions of Rock’s Most Dangerous Man, “One of the greatest and wooziest of looks back at a life of rock and roll hedonism that’s as moving as it is dangerous. A fast ride, indeed.”
On Way’s Facebook page a post detailed that he had, “sustained life threatening injuries in an accident two months ago, but fought hard until finally succumbing to those injuries at 11.35am BST today (August 14). His wife, Jenny, was at his side.”
Bassist Geezer Butler posted on Twitter: “This year keeps getting worse. Pete Way, one of the ‘characters’ of metal… has passed… Very funny man. RIP Pete.”
