Outrageous Cherry’s Larry Ray Dead At 61

Written by:

Larry Ray, the guitar player of the band Outrageous Cherry has died.

According to his bandmates, the cause of death was lung cancer.

Ray was 61.

Born Larry Ray Piekutowski, Ray co-founded the Detroit psych outfit back in 1991 along with Matthew Smith. Over the course of their career, Outrageous Cherry put out a dozen albums. Although they hadn’t put out a long player since 2014’s The Digital Age, they did put out a single this year called “I Believe In Sunshine.”

On their Facebook page the band wrote: “Larry was a mysterious guy, who would typically provide elliptical answers to the most straightforward questions, as if he were reading from a 40’s film noir script. He had a seemingly limitless knowledge of all kinds of music, and a highly individual guitar style: left-handed, never playing the same thing twice, always coming up with something new. And he was a really nice guy. Larry was one of a kind, and we miss him already.”
