Brent Hinds, who co-founded the metal outfit Mastodon, has died.
The singer/guitarist was killed in a motorcycle crash on Wednesday evening (August 20) in Atlanta.
The Alabama-born Hinds was 51.
The accident was said to be caused by a BMW SUV that didn’t yield while turning in an intersection, which then collided with Hinds, who was riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle.
Medical personnel declared Hinds dead at the scene of the accident.
Hinds was weaned on country music as a kid and got his start playing the banjo before later going on to study classical guitar at the Alabama School of Fine Arts. A love of Metallica, the Melvins and Neurosis informed his musical style and he co-founded the Grammy-Award winning Mastodon in 2020 in Atlanta along with bassist Troy Sanders, guitarist Bill Kelliher and drummer Brann Dailor.
Hinds and the band parted ways in early 2025.
On social media, Mastodon wrote: “We are in a state of unfathomable sadness and grief… last night Brent Hinds passed away as a result of a tragic accident…We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we’ve shared so many triumphs, milestones, and the creation of music that has touched the hearts of so many. Our hearts are with Brent’s family, friends, and fans. At this time, we please ask that you respect everyone’s privacy during this difficult time. RIP Brent.”
