FX has announced that its first-year comedy “The Comedians” will not be returning for a second season.
The Ben Wexler-produced series was rumored to be on the chopping block for months, but insiders suggested that an Emmy nomination could save the show.
However, when the nominations were announced last week, “The Comedians” failed to garner a single nod.
In spite of critical acclaim for the series, which seemed to take its inspiration from shows like “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and the mockumentary style of “The Office,” it never got a solid foothold in the ratings since its April debut.
Variety reported that the show, “was a ratings laggard from the outset, with its premiere in April averaging 878,000 same-night viewers and 1.18 million viewers in Live+3, according to Nielsen. Its finale drew just 509,000 on June 25, and about 667,000 in Live+3.”
