Ex-Clean Singer And Flying Nun Legend Doug Hood Dead At 70

Doug Hood, whose recording engineering credits include The Chills, The Verlaines and Sneaky Feelings, has died.

The Te Kūiti-born Hood who was seventy, had been battling cancer for the last several years and died in a hospital in Auckland.

Hood was the first singer of The Clean, before deciding to spend his time as a recording engineer. Known for engineering The Chills’ “I Love My Leather Jacket” and “Pink Frost” as well as Sneaky Feelings’ “Be My Friend,” Hood’s impressive career also found him working as a manager, a booker and a promoter.

Known for his keen musical instincts, he engineered Flying Nun’s now legendary 1982 Dunedin Double EP.

Hood was named an Officer of the New Zealand Order Of Merit in 2023.
