Essra Mohawk Dead At 75

Written by:

Singer/songwriter Essra Mohawk has died.

The Philadelphia-born musician was 75.

Although the cause of death is unknown, Mohawk (who was born Sandra Hurvitz), had reportedly been quite ill for the last few months.

Mohawk, who collaborated with Jerry Garcia and Frank Zappa, put out nearly fifteen albums in her career. Her songs were covered by the Shangri-Las, Cyndi Lauper and Tina Turner.

Gen-Xers might remember Mohawk’s voice on such Schoolhouse Rock songs as “Mother Necessity” and “Sufferin Till Suffrage.”

Mohawk also sang backup for Carole King, John Mellencamp and Kool & The Gang. Her songs were heard across a wide range of television shows, including Joan Of Arcadia and All My Children.
