The Drive-By Truckers made a stop at the legendary Capital Theatre the other night (Oct 6) to play a raucous, inspired set of roots rock that was exactly what this photographer needed after what can only be described as an exhausting week of truly enervating news.
Dark as the country seemed last week, the Drive By Truckers were a perfect reminder of the healing power of music. Led by the fiery Patterson Hood, the Georgia outfit were in fine form, playing numbers from their eleven-album discography–including their most recent album American Band (2016)–with scorching intensity.
“Guns of Umpqua” was a searing opener, while “Darkened Flags On The Cusp Of Dawn” was decidedly moving.
The band’s reading of Tom Petty’s “The Waiting” was nothing short of moving, while the band’s cover of the Ramones’ “The KKK Took My Baby Away” was straight-up awesome.
Ending the night with the 1-2 punch of “Zip City” and “Hell No, I Ain’t Happy” was the perfect way to close down the house.
A truly fabulous night of music that was life-affirming and inspiring.
