De La Soul have just released a new song called “Royalty Capes” which is taken from their upcoming album And The Anonymous Nobody.
The legendary Long Island outfit are still comprised of their original lineup (Posdnous, Dave and Maseo) and from the sounds of this track it’s safe to say that one of the most innovative bands–not only in Hip-Hop but American music in general–remain as creative as ever.
Produced by Dave (otherwise known as Plug Too) and mixed by the mighty Bob Power (Macy Gray, A Tribe Called Quest), the song captures the loose vibe of the recording sessions for the new album. The band revealed that “Royalty Capes” is one of the first songs they recorded for And The Anonymous Nobody and in a statement described how the song came to be: “Recording started at The Bomb Shelter and perfected at historic Vox Studios in LA with an unorthodox 9 bar loop of saxophone slowed down and reconstituted for Pos and Dave. It was one of those rare moments where he Dave wrote his part first. Dave said it just sounded like royalty walking in and he put his rhymes down and Pos followed his lead. The song features the amazing poet Gina Loring.”
The Grammy-winning band have enlisted some pretty big names to guest on the new record–Damon Albarn, 2 Chainz, David Byrne and Little Dragon are said to be making appearances.
And The Anonymous Nobody will be out August 26 but can be pre-ordered here:
