Heading out to see Orebolo on their last night of a third night stand at the Capitol Theater (2/10), I had a vague idea as to what to expect–after all, the band is a side project of the lads in Goose and I’ve seen them play live before, so I figured I knew what was in store for the evening.
And I was right, but I was also totally wrong.
My familiarity with Orebolo’s music gave me a foundational expectation, but I wasn’t prepared for such a varied and unexpected setlist.
The acoustic trio that’s comprised of Rick Mitarotonda (vocals, guitar), Peter Anspach (vocals, guitar), and Jeff Arevalo (upright bass), are masters of the unexpected, cranking out covers by Tom Waits (“Christmas Card From A Hooker In Minneapolis”), Radiohead (“True Love Waits”) and Father John Misty (“I’m Writing A Novel”).
The two-set, 29 song selection was an endless delight of Goose songs, Dead songs and a Del Shannon cover.
It was a loose and breezy show, played with brilliant expertise, blissful musicality and pure sonic joy.
A fabulous night.
