Andy Fraser Of Free Dead At 62

Written by:

Andy Fraser, best known as the bass player for the band Free, has died.

He was 62.

The London-born Fraser co-founded Free at the age of 15 in 1968. The band broke through with their Fire and Water album, which contained the smash hit “All Right Now,” which Fraser co-wrote with the band’s singer Paul Rodgers.

After Free broke up, Fraser formed Sharks with Chris Spedding, but left the band after only one album.

Fraser then embarked on a career that was a little more behind-the-scenes, working as a songwriter for the likes of everyone from Joe Cocker to Chaka Khan.

He also wrote and performed the song “Obama (Yes We Can)” which was used as the official theme for Barack Obama’s 2008 winning Presidential campaign.

An official statement issued from Fraser’s camp reads: “Andrew McLan Fraser passed away on Monday at his home in California. He leaves behind his daughters Hannah and Jasmine Fraser, and their mother Ri, his sister Gail, brothers Gavin and Alex, and many friends and associates in the industry. A survivor of both cancer and AIDS, Andy was a strong social activist and defender of individual human rights.”

Fraser died at his home in California, however the cause of his death is still undisclosed.
