Unless you still live in the year 2015, you’ve probably heard Desiigner’s “Panda,” which may be the most ubiquitous trap song ever made. The song hit No. 1 on the Hot 100 a couple weeks ago, officially went Platinum a few weeks ago, and has been streamed over 100 million times on Spotify alone. A huge chunk of the song was also just sort of thrown into Kanye West’s “Father Stretch My Hands;” not coincidentally, that particular song is the most played and buzzed about cut off The Life of Pablo.
Like any smash hit you can’t go a day without hearing, opinions on Desiigner’s latest (and by that I mean “only”) song are usually of the love-it-or-hate-it variety. Personally, I just think it’s pretty good. From its production to its lyrics, “Panda” isn’t inventive or clever in any way, but it’s simple, stupid fun. It also earns points for not trying to give a glitzy take on trap music for the sake of commercial viability — something that artists like Rae Sremmurd and Drake do to nauseating effect.
My real aim in writing a piece about a song that everyone’s already heard a million times is to bring attention to its newly released music video, which is absolutely incredible. Much like ScHoolboy Q’s “Groovy Tony,” the video is driven by trippy, point-of-view shots that are a sight to behold. It’s incredibly fun to see Desiigner wild out as if he has no control over his body, like he’s been possessed by a trap demon. Given that Desiigner is a GOOD Music signee, the scale and quality of production is also fantastic. Yeezus himself even shows up towards the end of the video.
Here’s hoping this guy isn’t just a one-hit wonder.
