Because his songs reference amphibians so frequently, it’s no surprise that Robyn Hitchcock’s new single will be delivered on green vinyl.
“I’ve always wanted to press something on green vinyl and after 40 years here it is,” the singer wrote on his Facebook page yesterday.
The vinyl in question is a very limited-edition double A-side affair with two original tracks penned by Hitchcock and the Australian singer/songwriter Emma Swift. Produced and engineered by Teenage Fanclub’s Norman Blake and recorded in Kitchener, Ontario, the tracks are “Love Is A Drug” and “Life Is Change.”
The ARIA-award nominated Swift and the London-born Hitchcock put out a Record Store Day 7′” back in 2016, which was comprised of a Hitchcock number (“Follow Your Money”) and a cover of Neil Young’s “Motion Pictures.” The two musicians have also toured together and Swift has been known to join Hitchcock during his sets.
“I love his voice and I love singing harmony,” Swift told No Depression about their sonic union. “He’s very dynamic to play with, and changes all the time. We have very different musical influences and sounds, so the combination of our voices together is unlikely. There’s a perversity in it that we both like.”
As for the collaborative aspect of their relationship Swift went on to say: “We’re just starting to write together. I’m not a huge co-writer, and neither is he. We’re very un-Nashville in that way. He’s brilliant. He’s a surrealist poet with a guitar, and I love that about him. It’s very different from almost every thing else I have in my record collection.”
